1950s oil painting by Jacques Zadig
Jacques Zadig was born in Paris in 1930, the son of William Zadig, an established and prolific Swedish sculptor. He was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts as well as the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. He was awarded several prestigious scholarships, including the Ellen Trotzig Scholarship (1953) and the Skåne Art Association award (1960). He has exhibited both individually, such as in Malmö Town Hall (1954), Gallery Leger (1965), and in Krognoshuset (1957), as well as with fellow artists Ulla Borgströmhe and Knut Grane in the 1950s. Notably, he also was a part of the National Museum of Sweden's exhibition of young artists in the 1950s and 1960s. He also had a successful design career, producing decorations for the Skövde Cultural Centre (1964) as well as a series of stamps in the 1980s. Zadig’s work is currently held by many notable museums, including the Modern Museum in Stockholm. His work can also be found in the collections of the British Museum in London.
Zadig evidently finds inspiration in the world around him for his art. From isolated, coastal landscapes, to portraits of families, to still life as in this piece, he is concerned with representing the everyday. He does so in his recognisable style: reaching often for primary colours, Zadig portrays this commonplace scene with playfulness as well as with a distinctly modern style.
