Danish painter Ernst Rasmussen was born in Copenhagen in 1912. He studied painting at the Copenhagen Technical School and The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, with further artistic guidance from the respected artist Elof Christian Risebye at his private painting school.

The artist relocated to Paris and produced a number of paintings from his small studio under the pseudonym 'Jean Le Van'. After marrying Spanish artist Carmen Lillian Cerveraand, they moved to the south of France where he developed a strong friendship with his neighbour Pablo Picasso.

In this oil on canvas by Rasmussen, our eye is immediately drawn to the most illuminated area of the painting - the rectangular window. The cool light creeps across the scene, subtly illuminating the table’s surface while throwing mysterious shadows over walls and objects.

A distinctive characteristic of the artist’s approach to composition is his use of horizontal and vertical forms and lines that give structure to his paintings. In this still life painting, vertical strips of paint to the left and right of the canvas build a frame around the scene. This technique of enclosing the subject matter has the effect of creating a sense of intimacy, as well as guiding our eye inwards to explore the still life objects.

    Small item deliveries (ceramics, candles, prints, glassware, etc.) are shipped with Royal Mail or DPD. Prices are calculated at checkout.

    Local Bulky Item Delivery Guidelines
    Large item deliveries (sofas, lounge chairs, storage, tables, floor lighting, etc.) on within the local vicinity of our showroom in East London (E2, E5, E8, E9, N1 + N16) are charged at a flat rate of £24.*

    Greater London/UK Bulky Item Delivery Guidelines
    Large item deliveries outside of our local area but within Greater London are charged at a flat rate of £36.

    Mainland UK large item deliveries are priced at £58.*

    *Please note! Our delivery costs include a one-person delivery service with delivery to the ground floor only. If you are unable to assist with unloading or require your purchase to be carried up any flights of stairs there will be an extra cost. Please be sure to inform us at checkout of any special circumstances.

    Returns

    For items purchased over the phone or online we do offer the standard 14 day cooling off period whereby the customer is entitled to a full refund (excluding shipping charges), no questions asked. A 10% restocking fee may be applied to furniture returns at our discretion.

    We do not offer refunds or returns on publications or items bought in person in store unless the goods in question are proven faulty/unfit for purpose.
