While little is known about Thorsen’s life, a number of his works have survived from the early-to-mid twentieth century, when they were created. Thorsén seems to have largely worked in the 1940s, yet the style of much of his work harks back to an earlier time; people wear old-fashioned clothes, and are painted in a way that reminds of the post-impressionist style of portraiture.

This painting, like his others, uses decisive brush strokes to depict his subject. Yet, unlike his others, there is a candidness, or an in-the-moment-ness to the painting that fosters a sense of movement. The sitter, hair flipped over her face, is concealed from us, challenging the notion that a portrait relies on a discernible, specific figure. The vibrant red of the hair contrasts with the darker background to make for a simple and refined, yet intimate, piece of art.

    Greater London/UK Bulky Item Delivery Guidelines
    Large item deliveries outside of our local area but within Greater London are charged at a flat rate of £36.

    Mainland UK large item deliveries are priced at £58.*

    *Please note! Our delivery costs include a one-person delivery service with delivery to the ground floor only. If you are unable to assist with unloading or require your purchase to be carried up any flights of stairs there will be an extra cost. Please be sure to inform us at checkout of any special circumstances.

    Returns

    For items purchased over the phone or online we do offer the standard 14 day cooling off period whereby the customer is entitled to a full refund (excluding shipping charges), no questions asked. A 10% restocking fee may be applied to furniture returns at our discretion.

    We do not offer refunds or returns on publications or items bought in person in store unless the goods in question are proven faulty/unfit for purpose.
