Oil painting by Erik Nervil

Like this item and want one just like it? and we will contact you when something similar is available.

Erik Nervil was born in Vangede, a suburb of Copenhagen in 1928. He studied at the Royal Porcelain Factory in the mid-1940s and was active in Denmark throughout his life; he participated in a number of exhibitions across the country from the 1950s up until the late 1970s.

This painting was produced during the mid-stage of Nervil’s career, in the 1960s. The use of layered, fragmented shapes placed on top of each other using textured oil paint brings depth and dimension. It draws on a distinct cubist style in portraying something - in this case, a still life of what seems to be pottery or jars - in a way that is removed from how it would have appeared in reality. Yet, even when taking an abstract subject, he manages to imbue the piece with a sense of warmth and familiarity.
