Iron sculpture by Esper - 1968
The commanding presence and rawness of this striking sculpture suggests that the artist took inspiration from Brutalist-era sculptors, whose three-dimensional forms would often celebrate the qualities and limits of the raw materials used.
The sculpture’s surfaces bear a range of charcoal-coloured tones, along with patina and patches of differing textures that suggest the artist is interested in exploring the tactile qualities of metal. The inclusion of a supporting frame as part of the sculpture creates a sense of gravity and spatial tension that underlines the hard, heavy weight of the object. This heaviness is however juxtaposed with the tactile, raw surface, whose unfinished quality creates an illusion of clay-like pliability.
