1970s enamel painting by Jørgen Brynjolf

Like this item and want one just like it? and we will contact you when something similar is available.

Jørgen Brynjolf (1931-1993) was a Danish artist. He worked in a range of forms throughout his life, from paper collages to paintings, enamelwork to ceramics. He was a part of the Odsherred Painters who worked in Odsherred in Zealand, Denmark, who took inspiration from the land around them. He also was a writer (and the brother of writer Erik Stinus), producing booklets on a variety of subjects. Unsurprising, given that he had initially trained as a bookseller before becoming an artist.

He exhibited throughout Europe in the mid-twentieth century, including in Paris and Kalundborg, Denmark. His abstract style developed through his career, culminating in his work produced in the 1970s, like this piece.

Using enamel on metal, as Brynjolf does here, produces a unique, almost glacial effect, whereby the enamel doesn’t appear static but, rather, constantly moving. Brynjolf layers colours before using a spatula to strip them back and reveal the metallic brightness below. By layering the piece’s elements in this way, he is able to produce a dynamism that draws attention to individual shapes whilst also placing them in balance with one another.
