'En Fremmed En Byen'

Using bold brushstrokes and fierce colours reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism, this painting is a bit of a mystery. Not only is this the case on account of its unknown artist - signed by a ‘H. Tegn’ - but the name of the painting, written in bold pen on the back, translates to ‘A Stranger in Town’.

At first glance, the painting appears to be a patchwork of bold colours pieced together and layered erratically. Although abstract in its general appearance, it seems to take inspiration in its broad, expressive brushstrokes from the Fauvist movement that was spearheaded by the likes of Derain and Matisse in the early part of the 20th century. Few concrete shapes can be made out among the explosion of colour and strokes, except for what appears to be a face hidden amongst the layered brushstrokes.
